The Chicago Bears recorded another late-game win, this time with a made field goal to narrowly defeat the Washington Commanders, 25-24, in “Monday Night Football.” After the game, emotions were running high, and that meant it was time for another of head coach Ben Johnson’s fired-up postgame speeches.
After each thrilling win, Johnson has celebrated his players’ achievements, and this time was no different. He had game balls for the players contributing most in the win, including kicker Jake Moody, who the team recently activated from their practice squad.
During Monday’s away game, Moody connected on four of his five field goal attempts, including the walk-off game winner. Along with his contribution, the Bears’ run game also got the spotlight, as D’Andre Swift finished with 108 yards on 14 carries. Along with that, Swift had 67 receiving yards and a 55-yard touchdown.
Moody and Swift stayed humble in their brief speeches, allowing Johnson to give the team his fired-up rant to inspire their win streak to keep going. The coach credited his team’s effort in “all three phases” of the game.
“Man, let me just tell you this. Just imagine when we clean up these penalties. You guys see where this is going? Some people say that takeaways are lucky, they are not lucky,” Johnson told his team, adding, “You earn those things every single week, and we’ve got a train going right now.”
The Bears coach told his squad, “You never blinked,” despite the game’s ups and downs. That included several missed scoring opportunities when the team was in range, as well as sacks and near fumbles on plays that went awry.
“Not for one second. Nice and calm, the entire way through. And you know what? Whatever it took, we found a f***ing way,” Johnson told the players.
He finished off the passionate speech by leading the players in a series of phrases they’ve used after these big moments.
“Good better best! Never let it rest, until your good gets better, and your better gets best!” Johnson shouted as the players echoed his words, urging him to repeat them.
With that victory, the Bears have now won three in a row, including two games that came down to field goal plays, but on opposite sides.
While last night’s game featured a game-winning field goal from Moody, their previous win against the Las Vegas Raiders ended with the Bears blocking the Raiders’ attempt to win on a field goal.
The Bears may not always play pretty, but it seems Johnson is getting his players to give their everything, grind through adversity, and make the big plays when they need them most to keep winning.
Chicago moved to 3-2 with their latest win, keeping them alive in the challenging NFC North. As of this writing, they’re tied with the Minnesota Vikings, while the Detroit Lions are 4-2 and the Green Bay Packers are 3-1-1 to lead the division.
Next up, they’ll go for their fourth-straight win when they host the New Orleans Saints in Chicago. They’ll follow that up with games against the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals, both of whom have experienced struggles with their starting quarterbacks.
