Dan Campbell takes blame for Lions’ trick play confusion: ‘It’s a sore spot’

ALLEN PARK -- Dan Campbell is typically regarded for his candor any time he speaks with the media.

And while that quality was on display Tuesday afternoon when speaking to reporters, the Detroit Lions coach was somewhat tight-lipped when discussing the fallout from Sunday’s trick play against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“I don’t even want to talk about it. I don’t. I’m sorry. It’s a real sore spot,” Campbell replied when asked about the officials’ ruling on the play. “I told the team I take full responsibility for that. I do. The players did exactly what we told them to do.

“Goff did exactly what we told him to do. David did, too. And I’ll take that. You’ve got to make it very clear on where you are, and I didn’t do that. I told them I take responsibility for that.”

On the long and methodical opening drive of their 30-17 loss at Arrowhead Stadium, the Lions had the ball on Kansas City’s 1-yard line on 4th-and-goal. Lions quarterback Jared Goff stood behind center Graham Glasgow, tapped his side, and then motioned out as a receiver.

Glasgow then directly snapped it to Lions running back David Montgomery, who tossed what appeared to be a 1-yard touchdown pass to Goff. After a bit of confusion and a huddle by game officials, the touchdown came off the board.

As a result, the Lions settled for a 28-yard field goal from Jake Bates to take a 3-0 lead.

According to the pool report, Goff did stop momentarily at the quarterback position but did not come to a complete stop after going in motion. Had Goff stopped the second time, it would have been a legal play.

Campbell also opted against discussing the discrepancy in penalties called between the two teams. The Lions picked up four flags for a total of 38 yards, whereas the Chiefs went without one.
