Inside the pivotal moments that swung Lions-Chiefs in other direction

ALLEN PARK -- Normally, it’s hard to point at two plays in a 13-point loss. But it’s even harder to ignore two turning points in the first half for the Detroit Lions in their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast pointed to the nullified Jared Goff touchdown catch and the dropped fourth-down by Amon-Ra St. Brown as the two moments.

Hosts Kory Woods and Ben Raven dished on the NFL’s explanation on why Goff’s touchdown was erased, not to mention the delayed fashion they took it off the board. They also talked about the shocking rarity of the drop from St. Brown.

Goff’s touchdown reception that wasn’t came after a 15-play, nearly 10-minute opening drive. The Lions had to settle for a short “consolation prize” field goal after what should have been a tone-setting series. And St. Brown’s drop came on fourth-and-2 near midfield, with the Lions leading 10-6 with a chance to put the Chiefs in a hole.

“I mean, man, if St. Brown makes that catch, which we have seen him do over and over and over and over and over again ... I just -- that when St. Brown drops a ball like that, it kind of just changed the feeling of this game,” Raven said on the podcast.

Woods emphasized how such mistakes are magnified against elite competition:

“You can’t leave those type of plays on the field when you’re on the road playing against a tough Chiefs team.”
