Eagles coach plans to bench inconsistent young player after recent poor performance

PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles’ cornerback carousel will continue this Sunday in the team’s Week 7 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio told reporters on Tuesday that cornerback Adoree’ Jackson will likely reclaim the starting job from Kelee Ringo.

Jackson started the first three games for Philadelphia’s defense, missed Week 4 with an injury and was demoted to a backup role in the last two games.

He replaced Quinyon Mitchell in the second quarter of the Eagles’ Week 6 loss to the New York Giants after Mitchell suffered a hamstring injury. He played better than Ringo but not by much.

On the Giants’ opening drive, backup wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey outmuscled Ringo for a 34-yard contested catch that set up a 20-yard touchdown run by rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart. On the next possession, slot WR Wan’Dale Robinson beat Ringo for a 26-yard gain, slipping to the turf mid-play, then getting back up and running for extra yards after Ringo failed to touch him down.

Ringo’s struggles continued, surrendering a key third-down catch to Humphrey on New York’s final touchdown drive of the first half. In the fourth quarter, he drew a pass interference penalty on Jalin Hyatt in the end zone, setting up a one-yard, game-clinching touchdown by rookie running back Cam Skattebo.

Jackson’s tackling was poor. Skattebo ran straight through his weak attempt for a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Mitchell might not be available to play against Minnesota’s elite receiver duo of Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison. If that is the case, Ringo and Jackson would both start against the Vikings. They could struggle badly in that matchup.

Once Mitchell returns from injury, the Eagles will likely put Ringo on the bench. Ringo flashed in his three starts, but he made more bad plays than good ones.
