Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones addresses calls to fire Matt Eberflus amid defensive struggles

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones cleared the air on the buzz around defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus amid a poor start to the season on that end of the ball. Following a one-score loss to the Carolina Panthers (30-27), the Cowboys dropped to 2-3-1 and now sit third in the NFC East standings.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Jones said that he’s still confident in Eberflus and believes that when the team makes adjustments, they play better on defense.

“When we have adjustments, they have been successful,” Jones said. “But, it calls for adjustments, so the good news is, it fluids. He’s had a lot of experience, he’s had his good days, he’s had his bad days. We’re getting here, we’re getting a young coach with a lot of future who’s had a lot of experience, including head-coaching in the NFL. I got a lot of confidence in him.”

The Cowboys’ defense hasn’t allowed fewer than 22 points in the 2025 NFL season (against the New York Jets in Week 5). They allowed 24 (vs. the Philadelphia Eagles), 31 (vs. the Chicago Bears) and 30 points (against the Panthers) in their losses, while also surviving after the New York Giants scored 37 points in Week 2 and allowing 40 in a tie against the Green Bay Packers in Week 4.

Numbers show that the Cowboys’ defense is reaching historically bad levels. RJ Ochoa of Blogging the Boys noted that the Cowboys have allowed 2,470 total yards in the first six games of the season, becoming the third team in franchise history to eclipse 2,400.

Eberflus couldn’t succeed as a head coach in Chicago, and many thought that going back to his roots would help him get back on track. However, whether it is Micah Parsons’ exit or linebacker DeMarvion Overshown’s extended absence, the Cowboys’ defense has been the weakest link of a team that still has a lot of rhythm on offense.
