Everton boss David Moyes admits missing out on £1,000 Celtic bonus left him 'raging'

David Moyes has recalled the time Celtic left him out of a five-a-side tournament that had him ‘raging’ because he missed out on a £1,000 bonus.

Moyes, currently the manager of Premier League side Everton, unusually started his career with Icelandic club ÍBV before turning out for Drumchapel Amateurs.

It was there where he caught the eye of Celtic, who he was on the books at for three years between 1980 and 1983.

Moyes failed to make a serious impact with the Hoops and after making 34 appearances, he moved on to play for Cambridge United.

But he does remember a time when he was impressing as a teenager at the club and was always one to be picked for tournaments to represent Celtic at.

One of those tournaments was the Wembley Fives, a five-a-side competition that Celtic played in during the early 1980s.

Moyes recalled that he was confident of getting chosen for the tournament, but revealed he was left out by coach Jimmy Lumsden.

That left Moyes fuming because Celtic went on to win the Wembley Fives and each player was handed a cool £1,000 bonus.

MORE CELTIC STORIES

He told Peter Martin on PLZ Soccer: “If you remember when it used to be the Wembley Fives when I was a young player at Celtic, I got sent everywhere.

“Every Sunday I was playing in the north of Scotland or in the Borders – we were sent everywhere to represent Celtic.

“And it was the Wembley Fives that came up. I’m saying, ‘I must be going to this.’ And Jimmy Lumsden, who worked with me for years, had to pick the Wembley Fives.

“And he didn’t pick me in that Wembley Fives to go there. Charlie (Nicholas) was in it. I think Danny Crainie, Willie Gardner, and they won the Wembley Fives that year.

“I was raging because I think they were getting about a £1,000 bonus at the time, they got for winning it.

“And all I ever get from Jimmy Lumsden and every time I meet him, he shows me the pictures of the Wembley Fives team that done it!”

How is Moyes currently faring with Everton?

Moyes spoke to PLZ Soccer during the international break with the vast majority of Everton players representing their countries.

Everton have enjoyed a decent start to the season as they sit in 8th spot in the Premier League with three wins, two draws and two defeats.

Moyes led his team to a good win over in-form Crystal Palace before the break, but now face a daunting trip to the Etihad Stadium to play Manchester City this weekend.
