Nets Cut Ties With 2 Players Ahead of Regular Season

The Brooklyn Nets have waived Drew Timme and Dariq Whitehead, per the NBA.com transaction log.

Whitehead was on a $3.3 million guaranteed deal that he will still receive, but Timme didn’t have the same kind of contract. There is, however, an opportunity for Timme to fill the final two-way spot in Brooklyn as the regular season is just days away.

Timme was on a two-year, $2 million deal with the Nets and averaged 12.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game through nine appearances in Brooklyn after his NBA debut in late-March.

The two-time WCC Player of the Year from his time at Gonzaga University went undrafted and landed in the G League for the 2023-24 season with the Wisconsin Herd, the Milwaukee Bucks’ affiliate. He put up nine points per game in 12 appearances, but took a much larger step up this past season.

With the Long Island Nets (Brooklyn’s G League affiliate), Timme averaged 23.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 4.1 steals per game in his 29 appearances this past season.

As for Whitehead, he has 22 appearances for the Nets at the NBA level, averaging 5.3 points across 12.3 minutes per game - and similar to Timme, has had more success in the G League.

In 17 games this past season, Whitehead put up 12.6 points while shooting 40.1 percent from the field. He added 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

Brooklyn appears to still be finding talent to scout as the start of the regular season nears, as they inked Malachi Smith to a contract, according to the transaction log.

Smith is coming off a successful senior season with Dayton University, putting up 10.4 points, 5.3 assists, and one steal per game on 42.4 percent shooting from the field.
