Everton's media team were quick to call out Lee Dixon for his comments about England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the nation's World Cup qualifier against Latvia. The veteran goalkeeper has been the Three Lions' number one since debuting in 2017.
Pickford has been faultless between the sticks throughout his international career and broken several records, along with helping his country finish runners-up at two European Championship finals. He earned his 80th cap tonight in Riga and continues to show no signs of giving up the gloves anytime soon.
The 31-year-old's club career has mostly been spent at Everton, where he's made 326 appearances since arriving from Sunderland in the summer of 2017. He's stuck with the Toffees through difficult periods, including relegation scraps, and Dixon is surprised he hasn't moved on.
Everton Hit Back At Dixon's Pickford 'Bigger Club' Comment
Dixon covered England's encounter with Latvia on commentary for ITV Sport, and the Arsenal legend pondered why Pickford hadn't made the jump to a "bigger club". The former Three Lions defender said "with all due respect," but offended Everton in the process when praising the shot-stopper with co-commentator Sam Matterface.
The Merseyside outfit's media team responded to the pundit by listing their achievements and even namedropping Dixon. They wrote:
"9 top-flight titles, 5 FA Cups, 1 European title. One of football’s most passionate fanbases. A world-class new stadium. Everton FC - a big club: past, present & future, @LeeDixon2."
