Lions sign Super Bowl-winning cornerback to practice squad, waive familiar safety

As the Detroit Lions continue to deal with a depleted secondary, the team announced the addition of veteran cornerback Kendall Fuller to the practice squad on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old former Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs has yet to play this season, last competing for the Miami Dolphins in 2024.

A third-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech, Fuller spent his first two seasons with Washington as a frequent contributor, notching four interceptions in his second season before being traded to the Chiefs in 2018 as part of the deal that sent QB Alex Smith to Washington.

He was a fixture for Kansas City in his first season, starting in all 15 games he played and putting up a career-best 82 tackles with 12 pass defenses and two interceptions.

Fuller won his Super Bowl ring in 2019 with the Chiefs before he signed a four-year deal to return to Washington.

After the conclusion of his contract, Fuller signed a two-year deal with the Dolphins ahead of last season and made 11 starts for them, however he did miss a handful of games due to suffering multiple concussions in a two-month period.

He was released back in February by Miami and the 10-year veteran has done workouts with teams like the Indianapolis Colts, but the Lions’ necessity for reinforcements will bring him to Detroit.

Detroit is currently down many of its key cornerback options since the start of the year including Terrion Arnold, D.J. Reed, Avonte Maddox, Khalil Dorsey and Ennis Rakestraw.

The Lions signed another veteran cornerback, Tre Flowers, just two weeks ago and he made his Detroit debut a matter of days later.

As part of a series of moves on Tuesday, the Lions also waived safety Loren Strickland and re-signed OL Kingsley Eguakun and DL Chris Smith to the practice squad.

Strickland had been signed off the practice squad on Oct. 1 and played on special teams against Cincinnati. It is likely his spot on the active roster will be taken by DL Alim McNeill, who is closing in on a return from injury.

Since going unselected in the 2024 NFL Draft, Strickland has spent most of his time going on and off the Lions practice squad, making an appearance in seven games last season solely on special teams.

If he passes through waivers, he’d likely return to the Lions practice squad.

Eguakun and Smith were waived from the active roster earlier last week to make room for the Lions to sign other practice-squad players ahead of their game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

They return as familiar faces on the practice squad who have spent their entire careers in the organization.
