Former NFL star Nick Mangold, 41, is asking for help. The former NY Jets and Ohio State Buckeyes center is calling on both communities with a plea for a kidney donation. The athlete, who was selected by the Jets in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, played 11 seasons in the league-entirely with the team. Mangold officially retired in 2018 but took to social media on Tuesday with a health update and a request for help.
Mangold Reveals Chronic Kidney Disease Diagnosis
Writing, "This isn't the message I wanted to share…" Mangold explains that in 2006 he was diagnosed with a rare genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. He shares that he is currently undergoing dialysis while awaiting a kidney transplant.
"Unfortunately," he writes, "I do not have any family able to donate at this time, so this is why I'm reaching out to you, our NY Jets and Ohio State communities. I am in need of a kidney donor with type O blood."
After sharing how one can sign up to see if they are a match and donate a kidney, he expresses his gratitude, writing:
"Most of all, I am thankful for my family, who have been my rock every step of the way. This situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me."
Fans React to Nick Mangold's Kidney Request
Reactions to Mangold's plea range from sympathy to potential donors miraculously offering help.

Another added, "If I was type O, I'd do it in a heartbeat for you brother! Stay strong, good things are no doubt heading your way!"
"Type O here. Signed up," wrote another willing fan.
"Hoping and praying for the best possible outcome," shared another, echoing the sentiments of many.
