The Hornets played a game on Saturday that got like no coverage, at least from this place. They defeated Cooper Flagg and the Dallas Mavericks, but that result in and of itself doesn’t mean anything. However, the way that win came about was somewhat encouraging. Brandon Miller had the worst plus-minus of all the starters, and that was at +16. The starters dominated while they were on the floor, and the Mavericks only made up ground with rotational pieces in the game. It’s just one game, but hopefully that’s a sign that this starting group can make a little bit of noise.
They’ll try to build off that tonight in Greensboro against a Grizzlies team that is perpetually injured. They’re currently heading into the season with Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., Zach Edey, and Brandon Clarke all set to potentially miss time to start the season. None are going to play tonight, so the Hornets will be facing a B team of sorts. Jaylen Wells or Kentavious Caldwell-Pope might be the best healthy players. I don’t know. It must stink to be a Grizzlies fan right now (probably sounds rich coming from a Hornets fan).
We do get to see Cedric Coward, who was a very enigmatic prospect this last draft cycle. Former Hornets summer league great PJ Hall is also hanging around over there. Otherwise, there’s not much else to pay attention to outside of the developing chemistry of the good guys.
