COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nick Mangold, a former All-American center for Ohio State football, is in need of a kidney transplant.
In a message shared with the New York Jets community Tuesday, Mangold said he was diagnosed in 2006 with a, “genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease.”
The multiple-time All-Pro selection said he has no family able to donate, which is why he reached out to those associated with the Jets — a franchise he played for from 2006-16.
Mangold is in need of a kidney donor with type O blood. Those willing to help are encouraged to visit this site and follow these instructions.
“While this has been a tough stretch, I’m staying positive and focused on the path ahead,” Mangold wrote. “I’m looking forward to better days and getting back to full strength soon. I’ll see you all at MetLife Stadium very soon.”
Mangold, 41, is a native of Centerville, Ohio, and attended Archbishop Alter High School. He started his collegiate career with the Buckeyes in 2002 and was a three-year starter.
He earned All-Big Ten and All-American honors in 2005 before getting drafted by the Jets in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft.
