Eugene Asante returned to the NFL on Tuesday when the Cleveland Browns signed the former Auburn linebacker for their practice squad, the team announced.
The rookie had been out of the NFL since Aug. 26, when the Miami Dolphins waived him with an injury settlement. Asante sustained an ankle injury in the Dolphins’ preseason finale – a 14-6 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 23.

During the preseason, Asante had the third-most tackles for the Miami defense with 10. He also had one tackle for loss, one pass breakup and one special-teams tackle.
Asante joined Miami in May as an undrafted rookie.
Each NFL team has a 16-player practice squad. Members of the practice squad do everything the 53 members of the active roster do except play in the games. However, each team can elevate two members of its practice squad to active status for each game.
In their next game, the Browns play the Dolphins at noon CDT Sunday at Huntingdon Bank Field in Cleveland.
