International round-up: Alleyne and Irankunda star during October break

Alleyne picked up the player of the match award from England Under-21's 1-0 win over Andorra on Monday, having also played 90 minutes in the 4-0 victory over Moldova last Friday.

The Manchester City loanee featured alongside top Premier League talent such as Rico Lewis, Ethan Nwaneri and Jamie Gittens for the Young Lions.

Irankunda also hit the headlines for the second consecutive international break, netting the winner as Australia beat Canada 1-0 in Quebec.

The 19-year-old then played 30 minutes off the bench in the 2-1 defeat to USA in Colorado on Tuesday night – and has less distance to travel back to England than when he was down under in September.

It was also a successful break for Papy Mendy, who played 12 minutes for Senegal in a 4-0 win over Mauritania.

The result means the Lions of Teranga have qualified for the World Cup next summer, with both Papy and Formose Mendy hoping to force their way into that squad.

Midfielder Edo Kayembe still has a shot at joining them in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Kayembe appeared as a sub in DR Congo's 1-0 win over Togo and played 90 minutes as they beat Sudan by the same scoreline, ensuring a position in a complicated play-off system that sees them need to win a semi-final and final against African teams and then enter an intercontinental showdown.

Mamadou Doumbia will not be at the World Cup, though, having played no minutes as his country missed out on qualification.

Egil Selvik was another not to feature in either match as Norway took a step closer to qualification by thrashing Israel 5-0 before drawing 1-1 with New Zealand in a friendly.

Hector Kyprianou did see some game time, playing 26 minutes of Cyprus' 4-0 win over San Marino.

James Abankwah captained Republic of Ireland Under-21s in their 2-2 draw with Slovakia on Friday, with Rocco Vata also substituted in injury time of that match having featured for the majority.

Vivaldo Semedo reported for Portugal Under-21 duty last week but was replaced after not shrugging off the injury that saw him taken off in the first half of Watford's 2-1 win over Oxford.

Outside of the official FIFA international window, meanwhile, Othmane Maamma continues to fly at the Under-20 World Cup.

The winger has scored or assisted in each of his four starts and takes on France in the semi-final on Wednesday.
