Green Bay Packers fans were cautiously optimistic about Matthew Golden heading into the year.
After all, the Packers had gone over 20 years without selecting a wide receiver in the first round, something players and fans alike had been clamoring for.
The front office finally listened and ended up taking Golden, a high-upside player with a lot of speed.
While his season started slower than anticipated, he seemed to find his footing in Week 6, only having three catches, but he turned them into 86 yards.
As “NFL Talk” indicated on X, Golden was one of four players in the league with at least three receptions of over 20 yards this week, a sign that he’s quickly starting to figure it out and becoming an elite deep-ball threat.
Most receptions of 20+ yards in Week 6:
▫️Falcons’ WR Drake London – 4
▫️Steelers’ WR DK Metcalf – 4
▫️Packers’ WR Matthew Golden – 3
▫️Seahawks’ WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba – 3

One game isn’t a large enough sample size to see what he’s capable of for the rest of the year, but it’s encouraging, at the very least, to see him making big plays.
This team hasn’t had a deep-ball threat like this in several years, certainly not in the Jordan Love era.
Having a player who can bust coverages and get past the defense is essential in this league, and the Packers seem to have their guy who can make that happen for them.
Golden is finding his stride at the right time, and with some easier opponents coming up on the schedule, he could develop that much more confidence and be even more ready to take on a large role on the team’s hopeful playoff run.
