Jerry Jones is about to sink another Cowboys season with one stubborn call

It's safe to say that Dallas Cowboys fans have seen enough on the defensive side of the ball. Matt Eberflus' schemes just aren't cutting it, and it's beginning to be unfair for Dak Prescott and the offense to will this team to victory every week.

After former Cowboys running back Rico Dowdle torched his old team for 239 yards from scrimmage, the calls to ship Eberflus out of Dallas only got louder. This could all end if Jerry Jones acts, but Jones' history suggests fans might have to get comfortable with Eberflus for the whole season.

Midseason firings are rare in Dallas, and unless things completely unravel and Eberflus loses the locker room, Jones will likely give Eberflus the full year to figure it out.

Jerry Jones likely won't fire Matt Eberflus in the middle of the season

Sure, Eberflus isn't a head coach, but it's also his first season as defensive coordinator. It's not like Jones to throw in the white flag on a coach in the middle of his first season with the team. Eberflus also has a rich history with the Cowboys, having served as a linebackers coach over a decade ago.

It's not in Jones' DNA to admit a mistake, but he did when he fired Wade Phillips back in the 2010 season. It's not like it mattered 14 years after the fact, but the subject came up when Jones revealed that he would not fire Mike McCarthy during the 2024 season, citing that he wanted McCarthy to finish out the season even though he was in the last year of his contract.

If Jones' philosophy holds, Eberflus will stay as the defensive coordinator. If we thought the defense against the Bears was an abject disaster, allowing Dowdle to make Panthers history is the cherry on top.

This also isn't all of Eberflus' fault, as he took the job thinking Micah Parsons would be a Cowboy. Jones couldn't get a deal with Micah Parsons, who's now thriving in first place in the NFC North with the Green Bay Packers.

The defense last year was a disaster to start under Mike Zimmer, but it rounded into form over the final two months. It wasn't nearly as bad as this year's group, but regardless, it feels like Eberflus will get the opportunity to finish out the season.
