Right now, there doesn’t seem to be one certifiably great team in the NFL. There are multiple good teams who have congregated at or near the top of the standings, and in the coming weeks, a couple of them could separate themselves from the rest.
Right now, with six weeks of the regular season in the books, the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are tied for the league’s best record at 5-1, the Pittsburgh Steelers are at 4-1, and a whopping 10 teams have a 4-2 record.
Plenty seem to feel the Buccaneers, who are getting outstanding play out of quarterback Baker Mayfield and rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, are the best team in football. A few may say that the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who are 4-2 but have struggled to secure victories, are still the best right now.
Fox Sports 1 personality Colin Cowherd, however, went with a surprising choice for his best NFL team - the 3-3 Kansas City Chiefs.
"I don't think it's particularly close," Cowherd said on “The Herd w/ Colin Cowherd.” "I think Kansas City is (No. 1)."
The Chiefs weren’t exactly dominant during the previous two regular seasons, and after getting blown out in last season’s Super Bowl, some were counting them out as far as being competitive this season.
They started 2025 with two losses, but with the vultures ready to feast on them, they have won three of their last four games, including a big 30-17 decision over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes looked like his usual self in that game, and they’re getting balanced production from their skill players on offense.
It should be remembered that Rashee Rice, arguably their best and most capable wide receiver, hasn’t played yet this year. He has now completed his six-game suspension, and his impending return should give Kansas City a real boost.
Kansas City has some things to clean up defensively, but Cowherd said it is “suffocating defensively” and mentioned the job it did against Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson in Week 4. In that game, Jackson was held to 147 passing yards, and as a team, Baltimore managed to convert on just three of its 10 third-down attempts.
After winning three world championships in the previous six seasons and reaching the AFC Championship Game seven straight times, the Chiefs know how to pace themselves through the early weeks of the season when they aren’t playing well. They know how to get themselves to Thanksgiving in one piece and then set themselves off to get hot afterward and give themselves a chance in the playoffs.
No one should expect anything less from Mahomes and crew, barring major injuries.
