Cleveland Browns receiver and former Purdue All-American David Bell is retiring from football, he announced on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old is stepping away from the game due to an off-the-field injury, he announced in a statement.
“Several months ago, I was blindsided by an off-field injury that was beyond my control, which put my football future in jeopardy," David Bell said. “After consulting with medical experts and praying, I accept that continuing to play football would literally risk life and limb.
“Although it is the last thing I would otherwise want to do, with a heavy heart I am announcing my retirement.”
Bell was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He appeared in 33 games across his first three seasons in the NFL, catching 41 passes for 408 yards and three touchdowns.
The Indianapolis native played in only two games last season before suffering a season-ending hip injury. He did not appear in a game in 2025.
“Football gave me memories I’ll cherish forever and taught me how through focus, selflessness, and determination, the whole can be greater than the collection of individuals," Bell’s statement continued. “Thanks to God for guiding me every step of the way and for the strength to chase this dream.”
Prior to playing in the NFL, Bell was one of the top receivers in college football.
He topped the 1,000-yard mark in two of his three seasons at Purdue, catching 232 passes for 2,946 yards and 21 touchdowns during his college career.
Bell was named the Big Ten Receiver of the Year in 2021 and earned All-Big Ten honors all three seasons.
His best year at Purdue came in 2021 when he caught 93 passes for 1,286 yards and six touchdowns before turning pro.
“I’m so proud of what I’ve accomplished and intend to apply football’s teachings to my next chapter, and to help make the world a better place,” Bell said.
