Manager tipped to drop Manchester City star in what would be surprise move

Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman has been backed to drop Manchester City’s Tijjani Reijnders from his team.

Theo Janssen comes up with the idea today, [via Soccer News](https://www.soccernews.nl/news/koeman-gooit-topspeler-uit-oranje/), in what would be a controversial move from the Dutch boss.

Reijnders has made a positive start to life at Manchester City this season after arriving in a big money move from AC Milan.

He’s a firm fixture in Pep Guardiola’s midfield. That’s also been the case for the Netherlands, where he played 90 minute against Malta and then 45 against Finland in this international break.

He came on the latter game in the second half as a substitute for Ryan Gravenberch. The Liverpool star had started alongside Frenkie de Jong in a midfield two. The previous game saw all three start together with the Manchester City man as the more advanced of the trio.

Janssen doesn’t believe that’s an ideal selection for Koeman moving forwards, though.

“That’s not the midfield I dream of. You need different types in midfield,” he said.

“They’re very similar because they rely on positional play. It’s actually good to have a Justin Kluivert type in there. He can play a through ball, score a goal, and dive into the gaps.”

And when asked to pick one of them who will have to move out of the side, he didn’t hesitate in picking the Manchester City man as the one to go.

“I think Reijnders will be the victim. He’s a very good player. Only, Frenkie de Jong is undisputed,” he added.

“Gravenberch is really good at staying close, winning possessions, and playing duels. But he’s also fantastic at getting open and playing forward. Frenkie and Gravenberch complement each other; they simply fit together best.”
