David Moyes says he had a player at Everton who’s unlike anyone he’s ever seen since

David Moyes has managed 547 games for Everton, so it’s fair to say he’s seen a lot over the years.

The Everton manager has coached hundreds of players throughout his two spells on Merseyside, each with varying degrees of quality.

David Moyes has developed some top players like Leighton Baines, Steven Pienaar and Tim Cahill, to name only a few.

However, there is one player who stands out above the rest in the Scotsman’s eyes.

“And if you think of what we all sort of were brought up in, the street footballers, most of them have been brought up playing in the streets, early doors and in the parks and whatnot.

Moyes has previously revealed the moment when he knew Rooney would go on to become an all-time great.

“When he was only a boy he would kick all the balls away on the training ground and I would get annoyed,” Moyes admitted back in 2018.

“But one day we had a small eight-a-side game and he scored a goal by chipping the goalie right from the byline.

“It was one of those moments where the staff were looking round at each other and saying ‘did he really just do that?’ It was a moment when time nearly stood still for us.”
