Dion in the Sky Blue
On this day (15th October) in 1994 TV cameras and a crowd of 28,219 were at Goodison Park in Liverpool as the Sky Blues, on a bit of a revival from a poor start to the season, took on a struggling Everton side. The Sky Blues, currently managed by Liverpool hero Phil Neal, ran out 2-0 winners thanks to two early goals, a delightful eighth minute Dion Dublin effort from an overhead kick and another precise finish from Roy Wegerle in the seventeenth minute of the game. Dion (now a CCFPA member)had now scored five goals in his six games so far following his move from Manchester United!

Unbeaten in their last couple of games, with a 2-0 win under their belts last time out against Ipswich Town at Highfield Road the Sky Blues were good value for the win over the Toffees. It was perhaps unsurprising given that bottom of the table Everton had not found a win yet and the tenure of their ‘gaffer’ Mike Walker looked shaky to say the least.
It must have been doubly galling for the Everton fans when Dion scored his early goal as their board had rejected buying DD a year ago prompting then manager Howard Kendall‘s resignation! Though the Toffees had a much vaunted pair of strikers in Daniel Amokachi and Duncan Ferguson they got no change out of stalwart defenders Dave Busst (now CCFC’s ‘Head of Community’ and a CCFPA member) and David Rennie!
