BEREA, Ohio — Three Browns players injured in Sunday’s 23-9 loss to the Steelers will sit out practice on Wednesday, their tackle situation for Sunday’s visit from the Dolphins is shaky at this point.
They were David Njoku (knee), Jack Conklin (concussion) and Gage Larvadain (concussion).
Stefanski said Njoku is truly day-to-day, and he’ll wait and see on the other two. They’re at the mercy of the independent neurologist this week.
Stefanski said left tackle Cam Robinson, who left the game late with a knee injury, will practice today on a limited basis.
“He’s practicing,” Stefanski said.
If the Browns can get both Robinson and Conklin back for the game, it will help Dillon Gabriel tremendously.
In other quick hits from Stefanski’s press conference:
He said Jerry Jeudy will be fine despite his flurry of drops
“Jerry wants to provide for this football team in any way he can,” Stefanski said. “Obviously he’s a leader. We put a lot on his plate. We ask him to do a lot, so he just needs to do what he’s capable of doing. I’ve seen it many, many times for him.”
Stefanski said working through drops is a comprehensive process.
“I think you can learn from every play,” he said. “It’s not a coaching point just to say, ‘hey, catch the ball.’ You’ve got to tell your guys whatever it is technique-wise, whether there’s all sorts of tricks to the trade in terms of looking it in and finishing-the-catch the elements of the catch first before you turn, all those types of things. So I think coach (Chad O’Shea) does a great job with our guys on a day-to-day basis working those things.”
Will he call Bill Callahan?
Stefanski declined to say if he’ll try to rehire former Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan, who was let go in Tennessee on Tuesday along with his son Brian, the head coach.
“Obviously I hate to see that news down there in Tennessee,” Stefanski said. “I talked to Brian, I’ve not talked to Bill, but obviously I hate that news.”
Well, would you be interested in bringing Bill back?
“I haven’t talked to Bill, so obviously I think very highly of him, but I’m disappointed for him.”
The need for speed
The Dolphins are known for their speed, even with Tyreek Hill out for the season. It’s an element the Browns can use more of in their offense.
“Without a doubt,” Stefanski said. “I mean speed is something that defenses respond to, obviously, and the more ways you can get the ball in the hands of guys that can go, I think that’s the important piece of playmakers is getting the ball where they can put the foot in the ground and get vertical and make yards and with speed. When you block things cleanly, it can really be an explosive play.”
One possible way the Browns can incorporate more speed is to get fourth-round running back Dylan Sampson more touches.
