The last meeting between the two clubs this season was a tense one on the last day of the Premier League season at Goodison Park. The Sky Blues, in mid table, had little to play for. The Toffees, on the other hand, needed to win to stay up and looked like they might get it when Gareth Farrelly put the home team into a seventh minute lead. However, their top flight status seemed to have been ended when Dion Dublin scored for the Sky Blues with a minute to the final whistle.

However, the anxious crowd were mightily relieved (a feeling Sky Blues fans know well on last days) when they heard all the results had come in and Everton were safe, just, on goal difference in seventeenth place. The unlucky club to go down, on equal points, was Bolton Wanderers who shared the drop with Barnsley and bottom club Crystal Palace. The Sky Blues finished eleventh and Arsenal took the title by a point from Manchester United.
