Former NBA MVP signs with Sacramento Kings for 18th season

Former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook has signed with the Sacramento Kings, according to reports.

Westbrook, 36, is entering his 18th NBA season. He is expected to officially join the Kings later this week on a one-year, $3.6 million veteran’s minimum contract, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports.

Westbrook spent last season with the Denver Nuggets, where he averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists and 4.9 rebounds in 27.9 minutes per game in his lone season with Denver.

The nine-time All-Star previously played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder, the latter being where he won the 2016-17 NBA MVP award.

The Kings finished last season with a 40-42 record, finishing ninth in the Western Conference. Sacramento fired head coach Mike Brown in December 2024 following the Kings’ 13-18 start to the season. The team went 27-24 the remainder of the season under head coach Doug Christie.

Westbrook has led the NBA in assists three times and twice led the league in scoring. He is also the NBA’s all-time leader with 203 career triple doubles.

Through 17 NBA seasons, Westbrook is averaging 21.2 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, and 1.6 steals in 33.3 minutes across 1,237 games.
