Packers work out edge rusher amid injury, depth concerns

The Packers are kicking the tires on adding a veteran edge rusher.

Even after acquiring Micah Parsons in a blockbuster trade this summer, general manager Brian Gutekunst isn’t done trying to add quality pass rushers.

Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley gives instruction during a drill with defensive backs on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis.

After Lukas Van Ness was carted to the locker room late in Sunday’s Packers win over the Cincinnati Bengals, initial tests suggest the edge rusher won’t miss any significant time.

However, even amid a positive prognosis, the Packers hosted a handful of edge rushers for a workout on Tuesday.

The group at Ray Nitschke Field included front-seven defenders Jah Jordan, Andrew Farmer, Jeremiah Moon, and DJ Johnson.

The Carolina Panthers chose Johnson in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and he’s gone on to produce 62 total tackles with half a sack and one fumble recovery across his first 31 games.

Given the fact that Johnson can also play along the interior of the defensive line, ait would make sense for the Packers to try to bring him in both as a potential rotational edge rusher if Lukas Van Ness misses time and especially of Devonte Wyatt is forced to miss a second consecutive game.
