LAKE FOREST, Ill., — The biggest change the Chicago Bears made out of the bye week was shuffling the offensive line. After Theo Benedet replaced Braxton Jones during the Week 4 win in Las Vegas, Ben Johnson made the move permanent.
The 2024 undrafted free agent signing out of Canada made his first start at left tackle just a few weeks after making his first career start overall (at right tackle) in Week 4. He played well against the Washington Commanders, not allowing a sack and helping the Bears offense turn in their best rushing performance of the season so far.
That drew praise from his coach, who said he didn't have to 'feel him out' there when making playcalls.
"I thought he's done a really solid job for us," Johnson said. "The biggest compliment I could probably give him last week is I didn't feel him out there, which as a play caller, that's what you're normally doing. 'Hey, why is a play breaking down?' If it's a particular person, then you're looking to help him out somehow, some way. I never felt that last week with him."
Benedet climbed the depth chart in training camp as the battle for that left tackle spot was between Jones and rookie Ozzy Trapilo initially. But Benedet took advantage of his reps and made the most of the opportunity. While he lost the starting job to Jones, he worked hard, and when he got his chance on the right side, then the left side against the Raiders, he took advantage.
Now, Johnson sees his confidence growing.
"I think the confidence is growing," Johnson said. "I think his confidence is growing with his ability to perform in this league and our confidence with him continues to grow as well."
The versatility that Benedet offers, being able to play on the right or left side of the line, is helpful too. It gives the Bears options in case there is an injury at a key spot. With Darnell Wright returning and playing at a high level, the Bears' tackles appear to be a strength for this offensive line.
It's not only his skill set that is impressive, but how he approaches his job, earning some respect from his teammates as well.
"I remember when I first got here, I thought he was pretty dang good," Jonah Jackson said. "His technique is really good for a young guy. Just his maturity, his understanding of the game, the scheme, and just overall, he is a great professional."
Benedet has just one start on that left side, and his tests will get tougher as the season goes on. But hopefully the Bears have found their solution at a key spot on the offensive line.
