‘We haven’t been consistent enough’: Hurts calls out Eagles’ offensive identity struggle

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Four years into the Jalen Hurts era, the Philadelphia Eagles are still struggling with a fundamental question: Who are they on offense?

In a remarkably candid press conference this week, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts addressed the team’s ongoing identity crisis, revealing that even within the organization, there’s uncertainty about what this offense is supposed to be.

“Obviously establishing ourselves, and really kind of just searching for that identity of what we want to be as an offense,” Hurts admitted. “I think we’ve shown a lot of different things out there. We’ve put a lot of different things on tape and we haven’t been consistent enough.”

This confession comes at a critical juncture for the Birds, who are coming off two consecutive losses and searching for answers.

The fact that a team with Super Bowl aspirations is still “searching” for its offensive identity midway through the season should set off alarm bells throughout Philadelphia.

What makes this situation particularly concerning is that it’s not just about execution—it’s about fundamental direction.

The Eagles seemingly don’t know what they want to be, despite having many of the same key personnel and coaches from previous successful seasons.

When pressed on why it’s taking so long to establish an identity, Hurts responded:

“I think right now we’re searching for how can we put ourselves in a position to win football games and do it in a way where we can establish ourselves and have an identity in that,” Hurts said.

The quarterback’s comments reveal a team in transition despite continuity in leadership.

While Nick Sirianni remains the head coach and many coaches from last year’s staff are still present, something is clearly different about how the offense is approaching games this season.

One of the most telling moments came when Hurts was asked if the Eagles have reached a consensus on their offensive identity moving forward after a week of conversations. His response?

“We’ll see. We’ll see. We just got to play together as a group for sure. That’s always where it starts. But we just want to go out there and establish ourselves. It’s look different every week,” Hurts said.

That uncertainty is concerning for a franchise with championship aspirations. Great teams know who they are and lean into their strengths. The Eagles, by contrast, seem to be experimenting week to week, hoping something sticks.

Hurts did acknowledge that the Eagles have shown flashes of excellence in different areas over his tenure.

“Every year has looked different, you know. 2021 had its different peaks, 22′ had it different peaks, 23’ had it different peaks, and last year had it different peaks," Hurts said.

But peaks aren’t enough. Championship teams need consistency and identity—knowing exactly who they are in critical moments.

Until the Eagles figure that out, they’ll continue to struggle with the inconsistency that has plagued them this season.

Will the Eagles find their offensive identity in time to save their season? Hurts seems confident they’ll figure it out, but time is running short.
