Sean Payton says Broncos offense needs attention to detail, ‘has to happen fast’

The Denver Broncos offense, led by head coach Sean Payton, has had two good quarters the last two weeks.

The fourth in Philadelphia was special, rallying over the defending champion Eagles with a 21-17 victory.

And the first against the New York Jets was decent, taking a 10-6 lead after 15 minutes.

Unfortunately, the first three quarters in Philly were bad, as well as the final three on Sunday in London. Luckily, the Denver defense played out of its mind to hold on for a 13-11 win.

After practice on Wednesday, Sean Payton was asked about those large gaps of time in which the Broncos seemingly can’t move the football.

“I think it’s something that we’ve got to have a heightened awareness to and attention to detail,” Payton said. “It’s the little things, it’s reducing in the plan. That has to happen fast.”

Payton knows the Denver offense needs to wake up. Winning is always fun, but it’s already putting a lot of stress on the defense.

Plus, penalties have been an issue for the Broncos this season. They have 49 total against them for 448 yards through six games. That’s near the very top of the NFL in both categories.

Sean Payton was asked about cleaning those up because they’ve plagued Denver for all of 2025 thus far.

“You have to look internally first, alright. Are we doing too much? How do we reduce the variables? And then, are there repeat offenders? Obviously, we’ve got to address it during practice if we see it,” Payton said.

Clearly, the penalties are driving Payton nuts, just like the fans. He knows it’s on him and the staff to fix it.

“If it continues to happen, then as a coach or a teacher, we’ve not done a good enough job addressing it. And so, we understand its significance,” Payton said.

Luckily, the Broncos are 4-2 and right in the mix for an AFC playoff spot and perhaps even a high-seed. However, Sean Payton needs to help the offense get rolling, ideally with fewer flags on the field.
