Iron County nonprofit connects public to health experts

STAMBUAGH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Almost 40 people packed into one room to hear retired NFL player and health and wellness coach Jake Witt speak about exercise and nutrition Wednesday.

Witt explains how the fundamentals of diet and exercise can improve all aspects of one’s health.

“It’s not only for the young people, not only for the middle aged, it’s for all ages,” Witt said. “Everybody can benefit from some proper nutrition and exercise. And if I can provide a little bit of knowledge to anybody here that learns something, I’ve succeeded.”

The talk is part of Iron Area Health Foundation’s Wellness Wednesdays.

From cardiology to mental health, the series invites anyone to visit and learn from a new health expert each session.

Iron Area Health Foundation Director Lyle Smithson says the community has responded positively.

“The feedback that we’ve gotten from those who attended last year, and leading up to tonight’s presentation has been extremely positive,” Smithson said. “People are very happy we’re doing this and the turnout is good.”

This year, Wellness Wednesdays were expanded from three to five sessions.

Smithson says the growth is thanks to the hard work of the foundation’s board and volunteers.

“It’s something that I’ve worked with our board on,” Smithson said. “We’ve got a fantastic board of nine members who are very committed to our mission of just creating a healthier Iron County for everyone. And our feeling is that we are stronger if we all work together.”

The next talk is Nov. 19 at Young’s Recreation.
