Report: Keegan Murray reaches 5-year, $140 million extension with Kings

Although Keegan Murray will be missing the next four to six weeks as he recovers from wrist surgery, Sacramento Kings fans will be seeing the forward in action at Golden 1 Center for years to come.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Kings have reached a five-year, $140 million agreement that will keep Murray in Sacramento and keep the former fourth-overall pick from entering restricted free agency next summer. There are no player or team options included in Murray’s extension.

The October 20th deadline for an extension was quickly approaching, and new Kings general manager Scott Perry has committed to Murray long-term, a dynamic 6’8″ forward who can defend multiple positions and pose a threat on the perimeter.

It was never a question of whether Sacramento wanted to retain Murray, as is often the case in professional sports; it all came down to the numbers game.

Murray’s $140 million deal over five seasons comes out to an average annual value of $28 million, putting him ahead of Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. (the third-overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, one pick ahead of Murray), who signed for five years and $122 million during the offseason ($24.4 million AAV).

Now, Sacramento has Murray under contract through his age-30 season (2030-31) as a primary building block on a roster that is expected to look much different in the coming years.

Over three seasons with the Kings, Murray holds averages of 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.9 steals per game on 45 percent shooting from the field, 37 percent from three-point land, and 81 percent from beyond the arc over 233 games (231 starts).

According to Stathead, Murray is one of three players over the past three years to have hit 500+ three-pointers, blocked 150+ shots, and swiped 150+ steals, joining Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards and Boston Celtics guard Derrick White.

New Sacramento Kings general manager Scott Perry made his first imprint on the roster during the offseason, but had another move up his sleeve before the beginning of the regular season.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, free agent guard Russell Westbrook has agreed to a deal with Sacramento.

Despite not being with a team throughout training camp, he had been linked to the Kings on numerous occasions.

The Athletic’s Sam Amick reports that Westbrook’s deal with Sacramento is for one year and the NBA league minimum ($3.6 million).

“Westbrook has bonds with Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine, history with BJ Armstrong on the agency side, and shared respect for Scott Perry and Doug Christie,” according to Charania.

At 36 years old, with 17 years of NBA experience, Westbrook’s resume is well known: MVP, 8-time All-NBA, 9-time All-Star, 2-time Scoring Champion, and 3-time Assist Champion.

However, he has filled roles on contending Pacific Division teams in each of the last few seasons, both as a starter and reserve. Let’s take a look at his 2024-25 production in 75 games played (36 starts) with the Nuggets.
