A guest tragically died in an apparent suicide at Disney World near one of the theme park's popular hotels, according to police.

The visitor's body was discovered close to Disney's Contemporary Resort, one of several hotels situated on the vast Orlando site. According to earlier reports, witnesses said the individual jumped from the platform onto the monorail track.

Initial social media posts indicated that the guest had been hit by the resort's monorail, but a police spokesman described this as "erroneous information."

The Orange County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the death was "an apparent suicide.", reports the Mirror US. An investigation into the death continues.

The Contemporary Resort features a monorail track that passes through the hotel's A-frame structure, EW reported.

The body was discovered around 6.40pm along North World Drive, according to News 6 Click Orlando. The monorail service through the building was temporarily suspended. Officials have declined to provide additional details due to the nature of the case.

Disney World's Monorail carries guests from the Magic Kingdom park, EPCOT and selected Disney Resort hotels in minutes. There are three separate lines that travel throughout the park, according to the Disney World website.

The Resort Monorail and Express Monorail start running 30 minutes before the opening of Magic Kingdom, and they cease running one hour after Magic Kingdom closes. The EPCOT Monorail starts running 30 minutes before EPCOT opens and ceases operation 2 hours after EPCOT closes.

It comes after a woman in her 60s tragically lost her life last week after riding the iconic Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland, California. After being transported to a local hospital, she was "later pronounced deceased", as confirmed by a representative from the Anaheim Police Department to Entertainment Weekly.

The Haunted Mansion is one of Disney parks' most cherished attractions. It first opened its doors in 1969 in the New Orleans Square section of the park.

It also holds the distinction of being one of the final attractions that Walt Disney had a creative hand in, before his death in 1966, three years prior to the ride's opening.

The Mirror has reached out Disney World, the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Orange County Medical Examiner for further comment.
