Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has given his verdict on Casemiro and midfield transfer target Carlos Baleba.

Towards the latter stages of the summer transfer window, Manchester United were linked with a move for Carlos Baleba.

However, Brighton’s £100m+ demands for Baleba meant that United ended up walking away from a deal with potential to return in 2026.

Ruben Amorim wanted more physicality in midfield but was left empty-handed in the summer, meaning his first-choice duo has been Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro.

But with Casemiro now in the final year of his contract, a midfield overhaul is overdue.

Since the transfer rumours emerged, Baleba has struggled at Brighton and has endured a tough start to the 2025/26 season.

However, United continue to be linked with a move and legendary Red Devils midfielder Paul Scholes was asked about the 21-year-old.

In a TikTok video for The Overlap, Scholes was asked: “Casemiro or Carlos Baleba?”

On paper, Baleba is perfect for Amorim, and he solves the Portuguese’s desire for more physicality and intensity in midfield.

However, the 21-year-old would come at a huge price, and his inconsistency this season should be a warning for Ineos.

United are open to signing a midfielder in January and Baleba will no doubt be on the shopping list, but Amorim would be wise to hold fire and see if he turns things around at Brighton.

It is clear that United’s interest has affected Baleba, and the spotlight on him would be much more intense if he does complete a move to Old Trafford.
