Gianluigi Donnarumma believes that AC Milan have what it takes to fight for the Scudetto under Massimiliano Allegri.
Donnarumma came through the youth ranks at Milan and although he was part of the side that made a rapid ascent under Stefano Pioli, he never lifted the Scudetto. He had to make do with a second-placed finish in 2020-21 before leaving on a free transfer for Paris Saint-Germain.
The Rossoneri would lift the league title a year after he went but it was Mike Maignan who got to hoist the trophy aloft, the replacement that had been signed one summer prior from Lille. There is always talk of Gigio returning to Italy, but in the summer he moved on again, to Manchester City in England.
‘I spoke to people I know’
Donnarumma spoke during an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport about a number of different topics to do with club and country, and he also comments on how his old side are getting on, having previously admitted he still looks out for them.
From a distance, do you like Serie A?
“Yes, very much. I find it fun, and if it’s fun, it’s interesting.”

First from Paris, now from Manchester, it’s a privileged and almost unique observatory…
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience very different realities: from Ligue 1 to the Premier League, where I recently arrived. From afar, I can say that our football is no less than the others.”
Yet now you’re playing in a higher gear. That’s what everyone says…
“In England you run from the first minute of the game to the last minute, it’s not like that here, but that doesn’t mean it’s better or worse. It’s just the way it is…”
Who will win the Scudetto?
“There are four or five teams that will be able to have their say until the final corners. And, as I said before, this is precisely what gives Serie A a new dimension.”

Who do you see as the most likely team to win?
“I like Milan, and I’m curious about everything behind this turnaround. I’m thinking of Allegri, but not only that.”
Milan are Scudetto-worthy, then?
“Milan has great ambitions. I spoke to people I know who are familiar with the Rossoneri environment: they believe in it there, and they’re right to do so.”
The rest of the teams?
“The strength of Inter, a tried-and-tested group that thrives on recent experience. Conte’s confirmation in Napoli with the energy and skill of the Italian champion coach, Gasperini’s new Roma and its room for improvement, and Juventus to be taken into consideration. It’s certainly fun.”
