Jaylen Brown injury: Joe Mazzulla gives update on Celtics star after Raptors win

Jaylen Brown told Joe Mazzulla he’ll be ‘fine’ after the suffering a hamstring injury in the Celtics’ preseason win over the Raptors on Wednesday night.

Brown left the game with five minutes left in the first quarter after reaching for his left hamstring after dishing out a pass on a fast break. He was subbed out of the game at the next stoppage and headed back to the Boston locker room with a trainer. The All-Star was officially deemed doubtful to return in the second quarter with left hamstring tightness but did not return to the game in the final three quarters.

Joe Mazzulla did not have much to say about Brown’s situation after the win when asked for an update but did mention he talked with his star.

“Talked to him after, he said he would be fine, but I didn’t get a full update.”

The Celtics wrapped up their preseason schedule with Wednesday’s win and now the team has a week to rest before the team’s regular season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers next week. If Brown is not cleared to play for that matchup, Joe Mazzulla would have a host of options as potential fill-in starters including newcomers Josh Minott and Chris Boucher.

Hugo Gonzalez, Jordan Walsh and Baylor Scheierman would all be likely candidates to see their roles increase if Brown’s absence lasted into the regular season. Scheierman started in place of Brown in the second half of the Raptors win.

Brown posted seven points, two rebounds and a steal before leaving Wednesday’s game.
