The Friedkin Group backed Everton heavily during the summer transfer window.

The Toffees were able to add nine new faces to their ranks, with three of those coming in for fees in excess of £25million, plus the high-profile loan signing of Jack Grealish.

Grealish’s permanent stay at Everton is now becoming a genuine possibility, which highlights their newfound willingness to spend under their American owners.

David Moyes will be hoping for further additions to his group in the January window, and he could now be set to strengthen his hand in a crucial area of the pitch.

Everton ‘keeping tabs’ on Mario Gila

Jarrad Branthwaite’s recent injury woes have hindered Everton, with their depth at the centre of their backline seriously stretched in recent weeks.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

Neither Adam Aznou nor Nathan Patterson appear ready for Premier League football, which has effectively left Moyes with just five senior players to cover his back four.

However, Everton could be about to rectify that in emphatic fashion in January, as they are “keeping tabs” on Lazio centre-back Mario Gila, according to CaughtOffside.

The 25-year-old is attracting plenty of interest from the Premier League, with the likes of Crystal Palace and Brighton also understood to be tracking the Spanish star.

Tottenham are thought to be “serious candidates” to land Gila at the moment, who is likely to be available for a fee of around £40m.

New centre-back is a must for David Moyes in January

Everton could also find themselves without Michael Keane this weekend, after he was forced off with an injury during the recent win over Crystal Palace.

Branthwaite hasn’t made a competitive appearance so far this season

He has now missed 24 games through injury since the start of last season

The Merseysiders have been unfortunate with their run of injuries of late, but that has served to highlight how desperately they need defensive reinforcements in January.

Gila would certainly be an appealing target for them to bring in, but it won’t be easy for them, considering the level of interest that is mounting elsewhere in the league.

£40m would undoubtedly be a significant investment from The Friedkin Group, but a blockbuster signing is likely to be needed to provide Moyes with the depth that he needs, especially if Branthwaite’s struggles continue.
