Malcolm Brogdon retires from basketball

On Wednesday, the New York Knicks announced that guard Malcolm Brogdon retired. This came soon after Shams Charania of ESPN reported the same.

The news is a bit surprising because Brogdon only played nine NBA seasons. And he signed with New York after playing for the Washington Wizards in 2024-25 where he averaged 12.7 points and 4.1 assists per game, though in just 24 appearances.

All that said, Brogdon, who was set to make the opening day roster for New York, at some point decided not to continue the grind of a full NBA season.

In a statement [he provided to ESPN](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46607116/knicks-malcolm-brogdon-retires-nine-nba-seasons), Brogdon wrote the following statement:

> Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career. I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards.

>

> I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.

Now that Brogdon has called it a career after a Rookie of the Year performance in the 2016-17 season and consistent play throughout nine seasons, he could move in many directions. Here is one thing that independent reporter Troy Haliburton suggested.

Brogdon went to college in the region at the University of Virginia and perhaps he could remain an active mentor to the players in Washington. I’m not opposed to this idea myself. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
