Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim looks to be aiming to complete a special Mason Mount project over the next few months. Despite missing a few weeks through injury, the 26-year-old made his fourth start of the season in the 2-0 win over Sunderland before the October international break.
Mount had already featured from the off against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley, though he was forced off at half-time against the latter. The former Chelsea man marked his first start since then with a superb touch and finish from the edge of the box against the Black Cats at Old Trafford.
His inclusion resulted in Matheus Cunha dropping down to the bench, with many seeing that as a surprise given the expectation he would form a front three with fellow new arrivals Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
However, that now looks unlikely, as Amorim considers Mount to be a "super talent", according to The Sun. They have also claimed that Mount is viewed by Amorim as England's most underrated player and is of the belief there is not an attacker like him in Thomas Tuchel's squad.
Though Amorim will not be in charge of the decision, it has been added in their report that he will be taking some action, as he is planning to do everything he can to give Mount a platform to impress Tuchel.
One thing in Mount's favour is the fact that Tuchel is in charge, with the duo having won the Champions League together back in 2021. However, the likes of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze, Jude Bellingham and Morgan Gibbs-White will almost certainly be ahead of him in the pecking order.
It is no surprise that Amorim has these private feelings on Mount given what he has said about him publicly in the past.
“I really love Mason Mount,” he admitted back in March. “I see him and know how he suffered. I know how he does everything right - he eats right, his physical aspect is perfect. He’s trying too much. Maybe he is thinking too much about everything.
"He was European champion, he is a talent. When a player does everything like he does, he will always have the support of everybody here at the club. We will try to manage the load.
“You saw players who had a lot of problems in time, but they can then stay fit and I believe a lot in Mason Mount. We need players like Mason Mount."
Unsurprisingly, Mount is fully behind Amorim, with the United attacker offering a verdict on his uncertain future at the start of October.
“We’re 100% behind the gaffer,” Mount told BBC Sport. “We’ve had some results that hurt us – the team, the staff and the fans – but that was important today.
“We thought after Chelsea it would be the start of something and then we go to Brentford and have a disappointing result. It starts today and we’ll be working hard over the break. We want to get back-to-back wins, then three in a row and push on for the top four.”
