Former Rookie, 6th Man of the Year retires from NBA

New York Knicks guard Malcolm Brogdon has retired from the NBA after nine seasons, he announced Thursday.

Brogdon’s retirement comes about one month after he signed with the Knicks in September. He was expected to be a reserve player for the Knicks this upcoming NBA season, which begins Oct. 21.

“Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career,” Brogdon, 32, told ESPN in a statement. “I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards.

“I am deeply grateful to have arrived to this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey,” he added.

Brogdon retires as one of two players in NBA history to win both the Rookie of the Year award and Sixth Man of the Year award, along with Mike Miller, per ESPN. He won the ROTY award during the 2016-17 season with the Milwaukee Bucks and the 6MOY award with the Boston Celtics in 2022-23.

The Knicks issued a statement wishing Brogdon well in his retirement.

“Congrats on your retirement, Malcolm!” the Knicks wrote in a post to X. “Best of luck in your next chapter.”

Brogdon spent the 2024-25 NBA season with the Washington Wizards, where he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 24 games, including 13 starts. He previously played one season each for the Portland Trail Blazers and Celtics.

Brogdon also played three seasons for the Indiana Pacers from 2019-22, and his first three seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, which drafted him in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft.
