There may be some hope for the long-suffering New York Giants after all. After starting the season 0-3 and deciding to bench veteran quarterback Russell Wilson, they defeated the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles this past Thursday, 34-17, and they have now won two of their last three games.
Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who is now starting under center, is showing some promise, and running back Cam Skattebo is starting to look like a gem. Even better, wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson has been giving them some solid production.
But New York will be hard-pressed to make the playoffs with second-year stud WR Malik Nabers out for the season due to a torn ACL. It will have to acquire a game-changing wideout on the trade market in order to have the type of offense that could give it a shot at reaching the postseason, especially given how deep the NFC suddenly looks.
Apparently, the team is aggressively hitting the phones looking for such a player. Per Easton Butler, the Giants have called the Green Bay Packers and inquired about acquiring Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks.
Watson tore his ACL late last season and has yet to play this season, although he recently returned to practice in a limited capacity. In 15 games last season, he caught 29 passes and recorded 620 receiving yards.
Doubs currently leads the Packers with four touchdown receptions on the season, while Wicks has 12 catches and 129 yards. It could be argued that the Packers themselves need an upgrade at the wideout position, but they could end up looking to improve at another position group instead in the next few weeks.
One Giants player who has been mentioned as potential trade bait is pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. While he has put up 2.5 sacks, eight quarterback hits and five tackles for loss this year through six games, he has one year left on his contract after this one, and the arrival of rookie edge rusher Abdul Carter could make Thibodeaux at least somewhat expendable if he could fetch a wideout on the open market.
While Carter is getting ingratiated into defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s schemes, edge rusher Brian Burns is having a marvelous season for New York. He has tallied seven sacks through six games, and he’s on pace for a career-best season.
Against Philly last week, he had two sacks on quarterback Jalen Hurts.
