The Scotland international’s future came under the spotlight in the summer when he was the subject of a failed bid from Everton.
But the club’s longest-serving player and captain is now poised to agree terms on a deal which could potentially see his stay at Villa Park extend beyond a decade.
McGinn, who turns 31 on Saturday, is considered one of the biggest bargain signings in recent history having joined from Hibernian for just £2.5million in 2018.
He has gone on to make 295 appearances in all competitions, playing a pivotal role in the teams which won promotion back to the Premier League in 2019 and then survived relegation on the final day of the following season.
McGinn, made captain by Steven Gerrard in 2022, has continued to be a key man during Unai Emery’s transformation of the club.
He scored the goal rated Villa’s best of last season in their heroic Champions League quarter-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
McGinn has also been integral to kickstarting the current campaign, scoring the goal which earned Villa their first win of the season over Bologna before also netting in victories against Fulham and Feyenoord.
Emery admires both McGinn’s versatility and attitude.
Speaking recently about the skipper, the boss said: “He is playing with a lot of emotions. He responds in a difficult moment. He is a player who is very important in the dressing room and he is always happy and always smiling.
“When we need more than tactical and individual performances, he is always trying to get positive energy.”
McGinn will join Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne in signing new deals this year, with the club also in talks with Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans over new contracts.
Midfielder Tielemans is expected to miss another three weeks with a calf problem which has kept him out since September.
