After enjoying his best-ever season at Barcelona, Robert Lewandowski is now enduring his worst one yet in the ongoing campaign.

At age 37, the Pole’s receding form and physical levels have been quite evident, which has led to the player falling behind Ferran Torres in the pecking order.

Injuries haven’t helped either, with Lewandowski once again picking up a recent knock that will rule him out of action for the next few weeks.

Keeping all these factors in mind, Barcelona have decided to freeze the contract renewal of Lewandowski, reports MARCA.

The club will wait until the end of the season to fully assess the striker’s performance, physical stability, and fitness levels before deciding whether to extend his deal.

Sporting Director Deco has confirmed that it is too early to make a final call, especially with the management also concerned about the veteran star’s rising salary, which represents a significant portion of the club’s wage bill.

Keeping ongoing issues with financial fair play in mind, Lewandowski’s high salary could be a major deterrent for Barcelona.

Recurring injuries have further complicated the decision, raising doubts about the feasibility of offering him a new deal under current conditions.

Another key factor influencing the decision is Barcelona’s evolving tactical approach. With Hansi Flick possibly moving toward a system without a traditional number 9.

The German has instead relied on a false nine role, which has been filled by Ferran, Olmo or even Marcus Rashford. As a result, the need for a veteran striker like Lewandowski may be reduced.

For now, all options remain open regarding Lewandowski’s future at Barcelona, with the club prepared to make a decision once the season concludes.
