Match Report | Huddersfield Town 1 Wanderers 2

A second half dominated by Wanderers was fully rewarded in the dying moments as the Whites scored not once but twice in stoppage time to take all three points.

Wanderers went behind early following a set piece. Seven minutes were on the clock when Leo Castledine gave the evening’s hosts the lead from a Ruben Roosken corner. A run to the near post wasn’t tracked as the Chelsea loanee put his header past parent club teammate Teddy Sharman-Lowe.

The Whites responded through Max Conway from the edge of the area on 13 minutes. The academy graduate faked a cross on his right foot before cutting back out wide onto his left and fizzed a shot goalward. The strike had plenty of movement as keeper Lee Nicholls had to palm it away for a corner.

Five minutes later Josh Sheehan picked up the ball in the final third and put in a lovely cross to the back post from the right. The Welsh international found his man Jordi Osei-Tutu but couldn’t get over the ball as the header went wide of goal.

Wanderers had a great chance to equalise on 29 minutes through Marcus Forss. Amario Cozier-Duberry found Forss in the box and with a brilliant first touch the Finland international set himself up for the shot which was struck low and hard but Nicholls was equal to it and made the save with his feet.

On 41 minutes Alfie May tried his luck from distance in an attempt to double Town’s lead. The striker aimed low for the near post from around 25-yards but Sharman-Lowe was ready for it who parried it away from danger.

The first chance of the second half fell to Mason Burstow just after the hour mark. Forss’ ball in from the left found Burstow at the back post but the league’s top scorer couldn’t beat Nicholls with his header.

Former Wanderer Dion Charles entered the pitch on 65 minutes who has failed to net for his new club since making the move in January. The forward is still looking for that first goal after tonight.

Instant impact from substitute John McAtee who almost grabbed an equaliser within seconds of coming onto the pitch. Conway did excellently to skip past almost the entire Huddersfield XI before laying the ball on a plate for McAtee. He went around Nicholls before shooting but from a tight angle and off balance his shot didn’t have enough on it as the ball was cleared away for a corner.

Minutes later Burstow had another header on target but again Nicholls got his body behind it to deny the Bolton forward.

Only six minutes were added at the end of the game but Wanderers needed just three to find the equaliser. An inch perfect cross from Cozier-Duberry found Sam Dalby who headed back across goal for his first league goal for the Whites.

But it wasn’t done, all the pressure in the second half paid off with a late winner. Cozier-Duberry was slid in by Burstow whose shot was too powerful for Nicholls to palm off target as it flew into the net to claim all three points for the Whites.
