This week, sports commentator Joe Buck reflected on witnessing the terrifying moment.

“I didn’t know any more than what my eyes were telling me,” Buck said (via The Pivot). “And at the time, our director Jimmy Platt did a brilliant thing.

“We have that camera that hovers over the field; he took everything back. It would’ve been like an invasion of privacy almost.”

Hamlin went through a long and carefully monitored recovery before being cleared to return to football. Since then, he has become a strong advocate for youth heart health.

Buck is happy seeing Hamlin’s return to the NFL after such a traumatic event.

“It was something I’d never seen, it was something I never wanna see again,” Beck said. “I mean, thank GOD we know the end of the story. Which is, miraculously he comes back and he’s playing football again. I don’t think anybody would’ve taken that bet when that was all going on.”

Hamlin now works with the Smart Heart Sports Coalition and the AEDs for Youth program, which provides schools and youth sports organizations with discounted defibrillators. Its goal is to promote life-saving health policies in schools across the country.
