Why Ruben Amorim should overlook £65m man for Man United vs Liverpool

Ruben Amorim will know all too well the importance of Sunday's trip to Liverpool.

Few matches mean more to Manchester United fans than their clashes with Liverpool. In recent times, trips to Anfield have not been happy ones for the Reds, regardless of who has been in the dugout.

Their last victory on the red half of Merseyside came in January 2016 when Wayne Rooney scored the winner for Louis van Gaal's side. Despite their poor recent record at Anfield, United have enjoyed better displays there since the 7-0 debacle which plagued Erik ten Hag's tenure at Old Trafford.

Back-to-back draws precede this latest visit to Anfield and United will be hopeful of going one better on Sunday to end their near-ten-year wait for a victory at Liverpool. If they are to come away with the bragging rights, one key decision that Amorim will need to get right is his front three.

Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo are almost guaranteed to start. However, the other No.10 position is up for grabs with two players hoping to get the nod: Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha.

Mount finds himself in pole position to start having scored against Sunderland prior to the international break. Amorim is a big fan of the former Chelsea man and he finally looks to be finding his feet at Old Trafford.

Cunha has yet to get off the mark for the Reds. The Brazilian has shown glimpses of why he was brought to the club but his lack of goal contributions this season needs to come to an end, sooner rather than later.

Some may argue that starting him at Anfield and allowing him the chance to get off the mark against Liverpool would be a vote of confidence for Cunha. But United should be looking to stick with their selection from the win over Sunderland.

Mount is the player with confidence at the moment and he has been given a good rest since the win over the Black Cats given he has been out of the England picture for some time.

Cunha has been on international duty with the Brazil national team this week in Asia and there is no telling what his fitness levels will be after that long flight back to Europe.

A potentially game-changing role off the bench for the 26-year-old could be the smartest option.
