76ers’ Giannis Antetokounmpo dream could be over before it even starts

The Philadelphia 76ers could technically dream as big as trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the stiff competition they will face in that case could boot them out of the bidding war before it even starts.

The Giannis rumor mill dominated headlines early in the offseason, but it slowly became a moot front. As the offseason went on, it became apparent that he would be staying in Milwaukee for the time being, it being impracticable for him and his ball club to seriously consider a trade out of the only franchise has has ever known.

However, a recent report seemed to indicate that the Greek Freak lodged some interest in playing for the Knicks in New York, although the latter was characterized as not seriously pursuing a blockbuster deal that would have netted them the two-time Most Valuable Player to pair with All-Star guard Jalen Brunson.

But if anything, that only points to one thing — that the Bucks are starting to realize that they are at the mercy of their superstar. Giannis seems content in Milwaukee for now, but he expressly said that he is not closing any door. A trade sooner than later is also in the cards, especially if the Bucks falter this season due to their shafted personnel.

The 76ers face stiff competition if they want to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo

The 76ers have not indicated serious interest in trading for Giannis, but they are one of the very few teams that can concoct an offer if the push comes to shove. However, even if they decide that they want to chase the superstar, they will have stiff competition in that regard.

In fact, longtime NBA analyst Bill Simmons seems to believe that a team like the Spurs could win a hypothetical bidding war for Antetokounmpo. True enough, San Antonio has the necessary package of draft capital and young players to entice Milwaukee, and they do not have poison pill or adverse contracts on their end.

Aside from San Antonio, Oklahoma City also has what it takes to mount a serious offer for the Greek Freak. The Thunder still have the most robust collection of draft picks, and their litanay of young talent also cannot be ignored.

Put simply, the 76ers will have to put their best foot forward if they seek to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo. But even if that will be the case, it may end up not mattering in the grand scheme of things. It’s that difficult to pull off.
