Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes has been away on international duty with Brazil.
Brazil toured Asia during the October international break, with Guimaraes emerging as one of the standout performers, providing assists against South Korea and Japan.
Guimaraes set up Estevao’s opening goal during the 5-0 win in Seoul before producing a similar defence-splitting pass that saw Paulo Henrique open the scoring in Tokyo four days later.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side went 2-0 up only to lose 3-2 following a second-half comeback from Japan but Guimaraes, who was substituted for Magpies’ teammate Joelinton in the 57th minute, was praised for performances across the two games.
That is despite Guimaraes, along with Joelinton, facing an aeroplane malfunction en route to South Korea.
The pair endured a brutal 30-hour trip after problems with their flight out of Amsterdam. As per Globo Esporte, a broken window on the plane forced the flight to turn around. Both players then travelled separately.
Bruno Guimaraes ‘tapped up by Brazil teammate’
Like he is on Tyneside, Guimaraes is a popular figure among his international teammates, so much so that one of them has been trying to tap the midfielder up!
Paulo Henrique plays for Brazilian top-flight side CR Vasco da Gama, who are based in Rio de Janeiro - the city where Guimaraes grew up.
Speaking after Guimaraes assisted him for his first Brazil goal, Henrique jokingly revealed that he has tried to convince the 27-year-old to return to his boyhood club.
"The group welcomed me really well. There were some guys I already knew, who I’d played against in Rio," Henrique told Globo Esporte (via SportWitness). And there’s also Bruno Guimaraes and Richarlison, who are Vasco fans. I’m trying to take both of them to Vasco!”
Newcastle United offer Bruno Guimaraes new contract - reports
While it is no secret that Guimaraes is open to returning to Brazil before he retires, the prospect of happening any time soon is unlikely.
Indeed, Brazilian publication UOL have this week claimed Newcastle have offered Guimaraes a new contract until June 2030, including a £13m annual salary that would solidify him as the club’s highest-paid player.
Guimaraes initially signed a contract until 2026 when he arrived from Lyon for £40million in January 2022 before penning a five-year extension in October 2023. That new agreement included a £100million release clause last summer but after no clubs triggered it, United made the Brazilian captain.

In his opening 18 months on Tyneside, Newcastle survived Premier League relegation before he helped them qualify for the Champions League and reach their first cup final - a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in February 2023 - in 24 years.
A firm favourite with the supporters and someone who rarely misses a game, Guimaraes was appointed captain at the start of last season and became the first Toon skipper in 54 years to lift silverware after beating Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final in March.
A historic 2024-25 campaign again ended with Champions League qualification, with United most recently recording their biggest-ever win in the competition with a 4-0 win away to Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise.
In his three-and-a-half years at Newcastle, Guimaraes has made 163 appearances, registering 24 goals and 27 assists.
