Toone makes history as Olme wins Player of the Match in Man United Women’s win over Atleti

Manchester United Women made it back-to-back victories in the Women’s Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Atletico Madrid on Thursday evening.

Midfielder Ella Toone made her 200th appearance for United, making her the first player to record such milestone for the club.

Toone, who joined the Red Devils from Manchester City in 2018 is also the club’s all-time top-scorer and record appearance holder.

Fridolina Rolfo put Man United ahead with a superb effort in the 24th minute, volleying the ball fiercely past goalkeeper Lola Gallardo to score her first goal for the club.

United’s Dominique Janssen was sent off due to a dangerous challenge in the 41st minute, putting Marc Skinner’s side lead under threat.

Atleti nearly took advantage of their numerical advantage to restore parity before halftime, but goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce produced a brilliant save to deny the hosts.

Tullis-Joyce made a brilliant stop again to prevent Atleti from scoring before the hour mark.

The Spanish side’s quest to draw level suffered a setback in the 74th minute, as Alexia Fernandez got red-carded.

Five minutes from time, Malard squandered a chance to seal the victory, curling her low strike just wide of the post.

Deep into stoppage-time, Tullis-Joyce made another smart save, ensuring United head back to England with the maximum points.

Julia Zigiotti Olme was named Player of the Match for her all-round performance, particularly after Janssen was sent off.

The 27-year-old midfielder joined Man United in the summer from German side Bayern Munich and has become a prominent player for Skinner’s side.

The result means United are one of the four clubs to have won their opening two games in this season’s Women’s Champions League.

United face Paris Saint-Germain on November 12 in their next match in the competition.
