“Huge joy” – Player explains whirlwind transfer to Manchester City

Last summer, Manchester City allowed Vitor Reis to join Girona on loan, and he played seven matches.

The La Liga side face Barcelona in the league on Saturday. Ahead of this clash, Sport sat down for a chat with the Manchester City player to discuss several topics.

Reis is a product of Palmeiras’ academy and played 22 matches for their first team. This was enough for Manchester City to bet on the 19-year-old in January.

Sport asked the centre-back how it felt to leave Brazil and move to the Etihad at a young age.

“It all happened very quickly. In six months, I played 22 games for Palmeiras, and at the end of the season, City appeared. It was a huge joy. My family helped me a lot, and I was able to cope well,” he said.

Manchester City loan exit influenced by Savinho

Pep Guardiola limited the Brazilian to 226 minutes in the second half of last season. Despite the restricted game time, the defender says he picked up a lot under the Manchester City manager.

“I learned a lot from him in a short time. These are things that seem basic, but they make a difference on the pitch. I can only thank him,” Reis explained.

The Premier League club sent him on loan to Girona to get minutes, which is needed for his development.

Manchester City’s Savinho spent the 2023/24 season on loan at the Spanish club. When asked about his first conversation with Girona manager Míchel, Reis opened up about the winger’s role in his temporary exit.

“Yes, I had a conversation with the manager. I already knew Girona a little thanks to Savinho, who told me very good things about it,” he added.

“When I spoke with Míchel, I already had an idea in mind, which was confirmed after speaking with him.

“Savinho had a very good time at Girona and only told me good things. I was happy to be able to come and I think he was a key factor in my coming.”
