“Ten seconds” – Player reveals shock at Newcastle United exit, said ‘yes’ quickly

Lloyd Kelly had a brief spell at Newcastle United last season.

Months after arriving from Bournemouth on a free transfer in 2024, he left the Magpies for Juventus on loan. In the summer, he was signed permanently by the Italian side.

So far this season, the Englishman has made a real mark. He has six Serie A appearances, establishing himself as a regular under Igor Tudor. He also has two goals and both proved key.

The 27-year-old has now spoken to Juve’s official podcast. He was asked how his exit from Newcastle United came about.

Defender believed he was important at Newcastle United

Kelly said, relayed by [TuttoSport](https://www.tuttosport.com/news/calcio/serie-a/juventus/2025/10/17-143840739/kelly_dentro_e_fuori_dal_campo_juve_non_me_laspettavo_quando_mostrai_la_foto_di_coman): “_I wasn’t expecting it because at that point, even though I wasn’t playing much at Newcastle, I was still one of the key players in the squad and felt important.”_

Kelly revealed he didn’t take much time to give Juve the green light.

_“My agent called me and simply asked, ‘Would you like to move to Juventus?’ It took me ten seconds to understand what he meant, and then I said yes. Let’s go. Even if the door had been just ajar, I would have said, ‘Let’s push for it.’ Luckily, it actually happened.”_

The centre-back should have no regrets about his decision to leave Newcastle United.

Even though he was criticised early in his spell in Turin, he is now on the right track and deserves credit for the fight he’s shown.

Under Eddie Howe, Kelly played only 301 Premier League minutes for Newcastle United. He was left on the bench on multiple occasions and was perhaps only brought in as a back-up.

At Juve, he is now a key player and is also playing Champions League football. Many in the Italian media doubted the arrival from Newcastle United but Kelly has done really well to turn things around.
