Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona is growing increasingly uncertain as reports from Florian Plettenberg suggest that the German goalkeeper has yet to decide whether he will stay at the club beyond January or seek a move elsewhere.
Despite earlier claims that he intended to remain and fight for his place, the latest developments indicate that a transfer or a short-term loan can no longer be ruled out.
The 33-year-old finds himself at a crossroads. Still recovering from a back surgery, Ter Stegen has watched Joan Garcia firmly establish himself as Hansi Flick’s first-choice goalkeeper.
This shift in the pecking order has complicated matters for the veteran, whose lack of game time could cost him dearly with the World Cup approaching.
This means the Barcelona captain should ideally consider a six-month loan spell to ensure regular minutes and maintain his position within the German national team setup.
As such, the German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly told those close to the player that for him to remain in contention as Germany’s No.1, Ter Stegen must be playing week in and week out.

The message is that if he stays at Barcelona and continues to warm the bench, his chances of being selected for the World Cup could fade quickly.
Barcelona, meanwhile, seem open to finding a solution that suits all parties. While the club values Ter Stegen’s leadership and experience, they are aware that his high wages place considerable strain on the wage bill.
Moreover, the emergence of García has given the coaching staff confidence that the position is well covered.
The club is therefore willing to facilitate a loan or even a permanent exit should the opportunity arise.
Ter Stegen’s contract runs until 2028, but that long-term commitment now appears uncertain. The coming weeks will be decisive, as the goalkeeper is expected to receive medical clearance in December, just before the January window opens.
If he cannot reclaim his place in the starting XI, a temporary move abroad could be the only way to revive his international ambitions.
